Transfers

I use my sketchbook, copying sections or entire pages, and then alter the images using enlargement, reduction, whiteout, or Photoshop. The copies are then transferred using matt medium onto plywood blocks.  I paint under and over the transfers with acrylic paint to create blocks of color, emphasis, and interesting shapes.

Bio

I moved to Utah in 2005 after graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in furniture design and woodworking. After making furniture for several years in New Hampshire and Massachusetts I returned to school to get my Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from Westminster College. I have been teaching art at a local middle school to students since 2011.
My current work starts with drawings which are then abstracted and altered before being carved into MDF board. The relief images are reminiscent of vivid topographic maps. My focus is a balance of line, shape and color with particular attention to composition. I enjoy exploring the contrast between curves, angles and mixed materials. Visually, I am drawn to rhythm and repetition with inspiration from traditional woodworking techniques and modern design. I am intrigued by the physical process of woodworking and art, the problem solving and the endless possibilities for experimentation.
